Roxon to hand over swine flu supplies

by Michael Woodhead
at the 2009 AMA conference, Melbourne

Federal health minister Nicola Roxon today agreed to a personal plea from the AMA to release stockpiles of protective equipment and antivirals to GPs to treat the swine flu outbreak.

At the opening address of the national AMA conference in Melbourne, federal president Dr Rosanna Capolingua said GPs were under strain from the burgeoning number of cases, particularly in Victoria, and an influx of anxious patients. She asked the minister to grant access to the stockpiles.

In response Ms Roxon said she appreciated the professional and calm response of the medical profession to the outbreak and said she would “take that up”, ensuring the stockpiles were made available where needed.

  • So does that mean the usual current government response "in the fullness of time, dependant on extraneous devopments and pressures, to the extent required for the overall ability of us all to maintain good health"?

  • I am unclear what Nicola Roxon means by "made available where needed" regarding protective equipment. General Practices are finding it very difficult to get hold of the masks and gowns needed for PPE. There are millions available in the stock pile and GPs can't get them privately. What exactly is needed to trigger release of the stockpile, who will get it and when will it arrive?

  • Remember one thing, this fed government has been tested time after time in the last 12 months and guess what? They have failed time and time again.
