New alcoholism treatment guidelines

New guidelines for the management of people with alcohol and other co-occuring mental health or drug problems have been released by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.

No clopidogrel rebound

No platelet rebound effect is seen when clopipdogrel treatment and tapering doses of the drug do not seem to have a role in preventing the reported clustering of thrombotic events after cessation of the drug, a German study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (55, 558-65) suggests.

Use OTCs not GPs

Patients should be diverted from seeing GPs for minor ailments to using OTC medicines, says former GP divisions leader Dr Tony Hobbs in support of a budget submission by the Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI).

Anti-vaccination leader steps down

The head of the anti-immunisation lobby group  ‘Australian Vaccination Network’ Meryl Doorey says she intends to quit the organisation and sell its assets, claiming she cannot continue running AVN without a large “injection” of capital.
