  • I also was appalled at the lack of general practice involvement in flu pandemic planning.

    A Tasmanian colleague, Dr Lew Garnham, ascertained that plans to allocate stocks of Tamiflu did not include supplying GPs. A less well substantiated report held that public servants were to be given prophylactic Tamiflu; debatably a diversion of resources, and I expect likely to increase prevailing drug resistance. I should add that the jury still appears to be 'out' on this.

    I have personally maintained stocks of Tamiflu since it first became available.

    As to the relevance or otherwise of general practice, we should use this medium to be as specific and forthright as possible. When the Health ministers discover this, I predict their interest in us as a group will abruptly increase.
