Rosiglitazone (Avandia) will become an Authority Required PBS item to reflect concern regarding its side effects, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (link) says. It has also approved new or extended PBS listings for several other drugs including dabigatran, risperidone, risedronate and fentanyl patches.
The new approvals join a list of seven other drugs that have been approved by the expert group on the basis of cost efficacy, but which have been deferred for listing by Health Minister Nicola Roxon.
The minister has agreed to attend discussions this week with health and consumer groups, including the AMA, to hear their concerns about the delays in listing of approved medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
