Calcium channel blockers protect against gout

Calcium channel blockers can protect against gout while other antihypertensives including diuretics may increase the risk, a study suggests.

An analysis of more than 24,000 UK patients who were newly diagnosed with gout by their GP, compared to 50,000 controls, found that calcium channel blockers and losartan reduced the risk of gout by 13% and 19% among those with hypertension.

However, non-losartan angiotensin II receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors were associated with an increased risk of gout (29% and 24% respectively),  β blockers raised the risk of gout by 48%, while patients who took diuretics were most at risk of gout (relative risk 2.36).
