GP practices not the place for emergency training

GP practices should not be used as a substitute for emergency departments to provide training of interns in emergency medicine, the AMA says.

In a submission (link) the to the Medical Board of Australia on core terms in internship, the AMA says a term in emergency medical care should be completed in an emergency department, and not in general practice, except in exceptional circumstances.

Junior doctors see an emergency term in an approved general practice as “an option of last resort”, and believe this should only happen where the practice meets clear criteria around equivalent exposure to emergency medicine, the AMA says.
