GPs should refuse to accept results and other clinical documents forwarded from nurse practitioners if they are not the patient’s usual doctor, the AMA says.

In new guidance (link) on how to manage relations with independent nurse practitioners, GPs are advised to exercise caution if they are not in a collaborative arrangement with a nurse practitioner who sends clinical documents.

“If you do not consider yourself to be the patient’s usual GP because you do not know or you have not seen the patient for an extended period, you should write to nurse practitioner and the patient advising to this effect and not to be sent any further results in relation to that patient,” the AMA...
