No need for invasive catheter angiography

Invasive catheter angiography can be avoided in all patients with newly diagnosed heart failure by using coronary CT angiography and cardiovascular MRI, Queensland researchers have shown.

In a study (link) of 28 patients with newly-diagnosed heart failure, coronary CT angiography had a 100% sensitivity, and a 100% specificity when followed up with cardiovascular MRI, coronary CT angiography, Dr Christian Hamilton-Craig and colleagues at the Centre for Cardiovascular Imaging, Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane have shown.

Reported in the International Journal of  Cardiovascular Imaging (online 26 July), the findings show that clinicians can confidently rule out coronary artery disease using coronary CT angiography, removing the need for patients to undergo the usual invasive angiography.
