Women accept screening for partner violence

More than one in ten women attending a GP has recently experienced fear of violence from a partner, but many are reluctant to seek help or discuss this with their family doctor, a Victorian study has found.

However, most women would not object to being asked about intimate partner violence as part of screening in general practice, according to a  survey (link) of women attending 55 GPs in Victoria.

Although uncomfortable about discussing the subject, most women who have experienced fear of violence from a partner or ex-partner would be willing to use help from a GP, according to the findings, published in the Australian Journal of Primary Health (online 10 Feb).
