Most young people are still unaware of the government’s $200 million headspace program for youth mental health and would opt for their GP instead as a first port of call for help, new research shows.
When asked about where they would seek help for a mental health problem, only about 2% of young people spontaneously mentioned the headspace centres, even when they were living in one of the 30 areas where they have been set up, research from the Orygen Youth Health Research Centre in Melbourne has found.
