Hypertensive patients are not meeting their blood pressure target levels, according to a study billed as Australia’s largest study of blood pressure levels in general practice.

The study involving more than 500,000 patients being managed by 733 GPs found that average BP levels have not changed between 2005 and 2010.  

According to the study (link), sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, 41% of patients receiving treatment for hypertension still had blood pressure levels that remained above the treatment target of 140/90 mmHg.
Almost 60% of patients with established cardiovascular disease or stroke recorded a BP level above their recommended targets of 130/80mmHg, despite treatment.
