A spike in demand for pharmacy sick notes has doctors fearful that people are bypassing their GP and missing out on continuity of care, particularly for chronic illnesses.

The so-called absence-from-work forms are available from major pharmacy chains for about $20 and can be used in place of traditional medical certificates. However, employers are not obliged to accept them.
