Surgeon let young woman down, coroner says

The patient died after complications from undiagnosed DVT during surgery for a broken leg

A woman who broke her leg overseas and died after subsequent surgery in Australia was not examined properly by a doctor during her initial Melbourne consultation, an inquest has found.

Coroner Audrey Jamieson has recommended the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons use the case to create a learning tool for orthopaedic surgeons on how to rigorously examine a fractured limb.
